Polish Americans are the largest European American ethnic group in the Chicago metro area, with as many as 1.5 million claiming Polish ancestry and only second in Polish population after Warsaw - capital of Poland.
Polish Chicago, often referred to as "Polonia," has played an important role in the political, religious, educational, institutional, and cultural life that has made Chicago what it is today.
Streets like Pulaski and Solidarity Drive are symbolic demonstrations of the impact that Polish Americans have made for over 150 years.
It is said that when Polish immigrants first came to Chicago, they settled wherever the work was, moving into neighborhoods near factories, transportation facilities and industrial areas in general. Polish Americans helped build numerous neighborhoods in the city and surrounding suburbs.
The largest Polish American community formed on the Northwest Side, around the three-way intersection between Ashland Avenue, Division Street and Milwaukee Avenue. As Chicago's Polish community spread northwest along Milwaukee Avenue, into Wicker Park, Bucktown and Logan Square, the intersection remained its political, economic and cultural center. For the first half of the 20th century, it was commonly referred to as the "Polish Triangle or the Polish Downtown".
Chicago's Polish presence can be felt in the large number of Polish American organizations located there, which include: the Polish Museum of America (focuses on Polish history and Polish-American art), the Polish American Association, the Polish National Alliance and the Polish Highlanders Alliance of North America.
Chicago also has a thriving Polish cultural scene and Jefferson Park has become the cultural center of the city's Polish community. Taste of Polonia is held there every Labor Day weekend, offering Polish food and craft, music and dance performances. Copernicus Cultural and Civic Center (5216 W. Lawrence Ave) holds Polish film screenings and many other Polish cultural events take place throughout the year.
Northwest of the Loop, in the area known as Avondale, you will find Polish-speaking doctors and lawyers as well as numerous restaurants serving up pierogies, galumpki, sausages and other authentic Polish delicacies.
Outside the Northwest Side, Polish Americans are mostly found on Chicago’s southern and southwestern outskirts. There are large Chicago Polish communities in Archer Heights and Garfield Ridge and many Polish businesses can be found along Archer Avenue, which passes through both neighborhoods.
Polonia remains a thriving, ethnic community full of life and culture due to more than 150 years of Polish immigration to the Chicago metro area. For the most part, the young generation of Polish Americans are highly educated and you can see Polish American professionals "blended" into all Chicago communities.
